Hey there, scone lovers! If you’re looking for a new breakfast pastry to try, let me introduce you to the wonderful world of Orange Almond Scones. These scones are a delightful combination of sweet and nutty, with a touch of citrus from the orange zest. Trust me, you won’t be able to resist them.
One of the best things about these scones is how easy they are to make. With just a few simple ingredients and a little bit of effort, you can have fresh, homemade scones on your breakfast table in no time. And the aroma that fills your kitchen as they bake is absolutely heavenly.
When it comes to serving these scones, the options are endless. You can enjoy them on their own with a cup of coffee or tea, or you can get creative and serve them with your favorite jam, honey, or even some fresh fruit. They’re perfect for a lazy weekend brunch or a quick weekday breakfast on the go.
Not only are these scones delicious, but they’re also a great source of energy to start your day. The almonds provide a good dose of protein and healthy fats, while the orange zest adds some vitamin C and antioxidants. Here are a few tips on making this recipe.
Toasted Almonds
Toasting almonds for a scone recipe is an essential step that you won’t want to skip! Not only does toasting almonds bring out their nutty and rich flavor, but it also gives them a lovely golden brown color and a satisfying crunch that will elevate your scones to a whole new level. When you toast almonds, the heat causes the natural oils in the nuts to release, intensifying their flavor and aroma. Plus, toasting removes any moisture from the nuts, ensuring that they stay crunchy and crisp, even after being baked into the scones. Trust me, once you try toasting almonds for your scone recipe, you’ll never go back to using untoasted ones!
Vanilla & Almond Extracts
Both vanilla and almond extracts are incredibly versatile ingredients that can be used in a variety of baked goods, but they are especially great in my scone recipe. A few drops of both extracts can make all the difference in terms of flavor, and they add a subtle complexity that will leave your taste buds wanting more. So if you’re looking to take your scone game to the next level, be sure to add a splash of vanilla and almond extract to your recipe.
Unsalted or Salted Butter
The type of butter you use in your scone recipe can make a big difference in the final result. Salted butter has salt added to it during the manufacturing process, while unsalted butter does not. When baking, using unsalted butter gives you more control over the amount of salt in your recipe, as you can add the desired amount separately. Salted butter can sometimes make your scones taste overly salty or cause the texture to become too dense.
On the other hand, salted butter can add a subtle, savory flavor to your scones that can be delicious in some recipes. It can also be more convenient to use if you don’t have any unsalted butter on hand. If you do decide to use salted butter in your scone recipe, you may want to adjust the amount of salt you add to the recipe accordingly, or omit it altogether.
Ultimately, the choice between salted and unsalted butter comes down to personal preference. It’s always a good idea to read the recipe carefully and decide which type of butter will work best to achieve the desired flavor and texture. Since I use sea salt in this recipe, using unsalted better might be best. But you do you and decide what will satisfy your taste buds!
Adding Extras
Adding berries to your scone recipe is a great way to add a burst of fruity flavor and make your scones even more delicious. Berries like blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, and even cranberries are popular choices and can be added fresh or frozen depending on your preference. Adding berries to your scones also adds a pop of color, making them look even more beautiful It’s a fun and easy way to experiment with different flavors and take your scones to the next level. Whether you’re making them for breakfast, a snack, or a special occasion, your friends and family are sure to love the fruity twist!
Egg Wash
An egg wash is a mixture of beaten eggs and liquid (usually water, milk, or cream) that is brushed onto the surface of baked goods before baking. Egg wash is used in many recipes for scones and other baked goods because it helps to create a shiny, golden brown crust and adds a nice flavor.
To apply an egg wash to your scones, whisk together an egg and a tablespoon or two of cold water, then brush it onto the surface of the dough before baking. You can also sprinkle sugar or other toppings onto the egg wash to add extra flavor and texture.
Egg wash is a simple yet effective way to elevate your scone recipe and make them look and taste even better. So the next time you’re making scones, don’t forget to add an egg wash to give them that extra special touch.
So what are you waiting for? Get in the kitchen and give these orange almond scones a try. I promise you won’t regret it. And if you do, well, more for me!
