This fall favorite will leave your pallet filled with mouthwatering spices and apple goodness! This is my go-to fall dessert that leaves my home smelling farm fresh with a hint of cinnamon aroma.
Have you ever had an apple pie that didn’t make you feel like you were home sitting at your mother’s kitchen table? If you haven’t, then ladies and gentlemen, you’re in for a treat!
Apple pie is such a savory comfort food and I love to eat it, especially during the fall and winter seasons.
Supporting your local farms during apple season is the best way to get farm fresh apples while also supporting your local community. If you don’t have a local farm near you but can attend a farmer’s market, then that’s great too. If not, then of course store-bought apples are fine.
Whenever I make an apple pie it reminds me so much of the times that I would go apple picking with my family. There’s something about picking an apple right from an apple tree. It’s so fresh and delicious and like nothing else, you will ever eat.
Apple picking is such a great opportunity and experience to get outdoors and spend quality time with your family and friends building on those family memories while also taking some photos for that possible perfect family photo for your upcoming Christmas card!
Crust
To make my life easy I usually buy my pie crust. Pillsbury makes good, flaky, and buttery ones. If not, a 9″ frozen pie crust works fine too.
If you have a homemade pie crust recipe you use, then feel free to do that!
Apples
There is such a great variety of apples. Essentially, most tart apples are used for apple pies, but I like to mix it up by using both tart and sweet apples. My favorites are Golden Delicious, Fuji, Red Delicious, Pink Lady, Gala, McIntosh, and of course Honeycrisp. These are more on the sweeter side of apples.
Granny Smiths are the best for tartness and crispness and of course Jonagolds, Braeburns, and Stayman apples too. Use whatever apples make your heart happy. For this apple pie, I used Gala and Pink Lady apples. Begin by washing your apples. Then, peel and core apples, finely slice them up and place them in a bowl.
Filling
For this next part, get creative and add whatever you like.
The following ingredients are my favorite and always a hit in my apple pie. I have yet to meet someone who has eaten my pie and hasn’t liked it.
Here’s what to add:
In a large bowl combine brown sugar, all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, apple pie seasoning, nuts (walnuts are traditional in apple pie recipes which is what I used in this recipe, but I also love pecans in this too), and raisins. Toss to mix all ingredients making sure all apple slices are coated in all this goodness.
Set Up
Using an oven-proof pie dish, place the pie crust in the dish and then pile apples arranging them all around your pie crust and pressing down as you pile up to fill your pie dish. Add cubes of salted butter as you layer the pie to add some richness.
If you want to place another piece of pie crust over this pie, feel free to do so. I prefer leaving it as is. I like how rustic and imperfect it comes out.
Bake your pie for about 70 minutes and then let rest for at least two hours before serving. This pie is also better the next day. So, feel free to make this ahead of time. A la mode is also great. This pie can hold in the fridge for up to a week.
Tip
Cut a slice of pie and place it in an air fryer for a few minutes top with some vanilla ice cream and drizzle some caramel on it. Grab a cozy blanket, nestle close to the fire, and Bom Apetite!
