This sauce is infused with fresh herbs and flavorful garlic.

Growing up Portuguese definitely came with its advantages because there are some seriously amazing recipes that I grew up loving so much! More of these recipes are to come! But we also made lots of Italian meals as well. My mom loves cooking and was always willing to try new foods and this tomato sauce is one of my favorites, along with a list of others of course. 😉
Tomato Sauce
The longer this sauce cooks, the better! Flavors will really deepen and develop when the sauce is cooked for a long time period of time.
My mom always used crushed tomato sauce or peeled whole tomatoes. I love it when my local supermarket has its Can Can Sale, because this is when I stock up on canned tomato sauce for this exact recipe! You can use either type of sauce or both, and manually crush them in your pot using an emersion blender, food processor, or potato masher.
My mom usually cooks her sauce in a non-stick pot over the stovetop for 4-5 hours on low heat, but I like to cook mine in my slow cooker. I like to pour everything in, mix it up, and walk away. It’s less stressful, LOL! You can choose whatever works for you!
What to Use with This Sauce or How to Serve It
This sauce is super versatile. It can be used with many other foods such as Meatballs, Eggplant Parmesan, over pasta, in stews, Baked Ziti, over my Chicken Cutlets (Best and Easy Crispy and Flavor Packed Chicken Cutlets – Keeping it Lucy) and so much more.
Slow Cooker
I love making a really big batch of this sauce. I actually made this for the purpose of using it in my Eggplant Parmesan. Using my slow cooker makes it easy to walk away from and not worry about for a few hours. I have a 7–8-quart cooker and use it all the time to make big batches of stuff. If you don’t have this size, no worries, cut this recipe in half and change the ingredients accordingly.
This sauce freezes really well too. You can freeze these in Ziploc bags, laying them flat in your freezer will save up room and will be easy storage, or freezer-proof containers.
In the summertime, we get a ton of tomatoes from our garden, and I make a sauce using those along with all my freshly grown herbs. It is delicious. Stay tuned for that recipe!
If you love canning, you can definitely do that with this sauce and get a nice collection of homemade sauce for future uses. It is more work and lots more steps but can be worth it. I’ll eventually share my canning procedures in the future on my blog!
Stay tuned!
